Donna sits in southeastern Hidalgo County on ground granted to Lino Cabazos as part of the La Blanca land grant in May 1834. The railroad reached the site in July 1904, the town was named in 1907 for Donna Hooks Fletcher, who was postmistress when the post office opened in 1908, and the city incorporated on April 13, 1911.
A 500-ton sugar mill went up around the same time, and by 1915 the town had a bank, a hotel, four churches, two cotton gins and a weekly newspaper. The 2020 census counted 16,797 residents across about 8.3 square miles, eleven miles east of McAllen.
The Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge opened on December 14, 2010, connecting to FM 493 on the American side and carrying passenger traffic only.
