Harlingen is in northwestern Cameron County at the crossing of US-77 and US-83, now codesignated Interstate 69E and Interstate 2, about thirty miles from the Gulf. Lon C. Hill founded it in 1904 and named it after Harlingen in the Netherlands, and it incorporated on April 15, 1910 with 1,126 residents.
